Outlook Grim As Bay Area Crab Season Opens
by Brian Hoffman, San Francisco Chronicle

The Amigo isn't the prettiest boat, by any stretch, but it is beautifully rundown, faded here and patched there and, like so many others at the wharf, burdened with crab pots and the prospect of an uncertain season.

The most-visited stretch of San Francisco's waterfront has made its annual crawl back to an almost former life for the start of today's commercial Dungeness crab season in ocean waters off the Bay Area.

There are actual fishermen working on actual fishing boats. Crab pots by the thousands have been loaded onto decks and dropped into the sea. Seafood wholesalers are busy taking market orders.

Steam rises from the huge tanks at Pier 45, where some of the first Dungeness will be offloaded this afternoon and lowered in.
