Allrecipes.com And The Pork Checkoff Serve Up Pork Possibilities

With more than 40,000 trusted recipes, Allrecipes.com has become the world’s largest social network of food and entertaining enthusiasts. To help these home cooks connect with all things pork, a microsite sponsored this year by the Pork Checkoff showcases 50 of consumers’ favorite pork recipes at Allrecipes.com to provide simple mealtime solutions.

“Allrecipes.com is a very popular site, because people rely on it for new cooking ideas,” says Laurie Bever, director of consumer advertising for the Pork Checkoff, who noted that the success of 2008 Pork Checkoff advertising on the site led to additional investments in 2009. “The site also offers a great way to drive traffic to our promotions. From April through October of this year, Allrecipes’ Pork Checkoff branded microsite generated 237,971 impressions, with high interest in pork recipes.”

The integrated microsite (http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Trusted-Brands-Recipes-and-Tips/National-Pork-Board/Main.aspx), which is designed for easy navigation, can be accessed through the “trusted brands” link on the Allrecipes.com home page. Many of the highest clicked pork recipes here included rave reviews from consumers, including:

  • Honey-Glazed Pork Chops (21,549 clicks). “This was easy and yummy. I will definitely make it again!”
  • Parmesan Pork Tenderloin (19,732 clicks). “Simple, quick, tasty ... excellent!”
  • Asian Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Pineapple (8,963 clicks). “This was amazing! My company and husband couldn’t stop raving.”
  • Chili Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with Apricot Ginger Glaze (6,221 clicks). “Wow, wow, wow ... was this the most delicious pork I have ever tasted!”
  • Hoot-n-Holler Baby Back Ribs (4,576 clicks). “I have a picky family and they LOVED this recipe. They can’t stop talking about it.”
  • Grilled Indian Pork Kabobs with Sweet Onions and Red Bell Peppers (3,845 clicks). “This is going to become a family staple because I can’t seem to get enough of it!”

When the Pork Checkoff helped select recipes for the pork microsite, project leaders looked for a variety of pork cuts and included easy recipes that didn’t require a large number of ingredients, Bever says. Allrecipes.com featured these pork recipes in its “Daily Dish” and “What’s Cooking” electronic newsletters throughout the year.

On Oct. 27, Allrecipes.com’s “What’s Cooking” e-newsletter created the highest click day for the Checkoff’s pork advertising, with the photo and recipe of the Lone Star Style-Smokin’ Spicy Ribs. The pork ribs stood out in a sea of Halloween dessert recipes, from Black Magic Cake to Caramel Pecan Delight, says Bever, who notes that the e-newsletter generated more than 4,300 clicks that day for the Checkoff’s pork recipes.

“E-newsletters work very well for us, because they drive high traffic to our pork recipes. Since online promotions are affordable and offer a great way to maximize our Checkoff investment, we’re planning more online promotions for pork in 2010.”
