People often say shopping for groceries while hungry is a bad idea. Well, the
folks at the Piggly Wiggly in Leland would beg to differ.
They do things a bit different at the little grocery store just over the bridge
from Wilmington.
The big difference? That's clear as soon you walk in the door: The unmistakable
hickory aroma from the in-house smoked meats
The store has partnered with the franchise company SmokeRise to provide
sumptuous barbecue. Beef brisket, ribs, pulled pork, hams, chickens – the deli
counter at this grocery store is a barbecue lover's dream.
This melding of barbecue and grocer happened in Leland just over a year ago,
with Lou Gizzi taking the helm over the pit.
