Posted: Friday, September 22, 2017 at 9:06AM EDT

The 31st Annual Spud Bowl football game is scheduled for Saturday September 23, 2017 as UW-Stevens Point takes on non-conference foe Adrian College (Michigan) at 4 p.m. at Community Stadium in Goerke Park.  The second annual Spud Run 5K race will also take place two hours prior to the game.

For 31 years, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, in conjunction with over 50 local businesses, has celebrated the potato and vegetable industry in Central Wisconsin by raising awareness about the importance of agriculture locally and funding scholarships for students from the area.

The Spud Bowl will once again feature free baked potatoes and French fries available inside the football stadium.  This year, Okray Family Farms of Plover is donating the baked potatoes, while McCain Foods USA of Plover is once again donating 1200 servings of French fries.

The Spud Run 5K will take place at 2 p.m. with the race beginning on Minnesota Avenue just outside the stadium and ending on the track inside the stadium.  Cost to enter this family-oriented race is just $20 (one child entry is free with one adult entry), and all participants receive a T-shirt, a ticket to the Spud Bowl game, free Point root beer, and a serving of French fries or potatoes.  To enter, visit: Entrants are also accepted in-person the day of the run. All proceeds go toward UWSP student scholarships.

The Spud Bowl celebrates the harvest of one of the most important agricultural products of the Portage County area:  potatoes.  The event brings together area agri-businesses, agricultural producers, and the entire Central Wisconsin community, while supporting UW-Stevens Point student scholarships and the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Department.  Multiple scholarships are awarded each year by the proceeds received from the annual Spud Bowl event.

Through the years over $100,000 has been awarded in Spud Bowl scholarships to over 100 students. This year’s Spud Bowl scholarship winners will be introduced at halftime of the football game.  The Pointer football team has enjoyed great success in the Spud Bowl games, with a record of 26-4.
