   Partnership For Food Safety Education & Supporters Expand 2nd Year Of “The Story Of Your Dinner”

ARLINGTON, VA. –  This holiday season, the Partnership for Food Safety Education (PFSE), partners with CargillCostco Wholesalethe Frozen Food Foundation and the public health community, to support the national “The Story of Your Dinner” initiative focused on the important role of consumers in the food safety chain of prevention, and actions they can take at home to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. 

“As families and friends prepare for bountiful holiday feasts, we want to remind them about important home food safety practices,” said Shelley Feist, PFSE executive director. “The last thing anyone wants during the holiday season is a foodborne illness.  We are grateful to tell the engaging story of how foodborne illness is prevented across the entire food chain – from farm to kitchen.”

In 2016, “The Story of Your Dinner” pilot garnered more than 200 million consumer impressions. In post-program surveys, consumers reported a significant increase in knowledge of basic food safety measures they can use at home, including food thermometer use, not rinsing raw meat under running water and correct refrigerator temperature range.

This year’s program, launching November 1, will include useful at-home tips through the following campaign activities:

·         An educational video exploring the “chain of prevention” – from the farm to processing to retail and to the family dinner table.

·         Five recipe cards for holiday dishes, complete with important food safety steps – created in collaboration with participating food bloggers:

o    7-Layer Salad by Food Family Fun

o    Mini Turtle Cheesecakes by Miss in the Kitchen

o    Butter Glazed Brussels Sprouts with Candied Pecans by Eazy Peazy Meals

o    Stovetop Creamed Corn by Katie’s Cucina

o    Cauliflower Rice Gratin with Kale and Leeks by PDX Food Love

·         Three fast-action instructional videos, showing how to create delicious holiday dishes with consistent food safety practices. Recipes featured in the videos include:

o    Roast Turkey

o    Southern Green Beans and New Potatoes with Bacon

o    Broccoli Supreme Stuffed Potatoes

·         Educational graphics for dissemination through social media and digital communications.

·         Printable activity placemats for children that make learning about food safety fun. 

“The food industry can take an active role in public conversation around steps taken to protect the safety of food. Joining with the non-profit PFSE in support of this campaign is an especially effective way to engage consumers about the important role they play in preventing foodborne illness at home,” said Hilary Thesmar, PhD, RD, PFSE volunteer board chair and vice president of food safety programs at the Food Marketing Institute.
