New Lidl Store In Spotsylvania Is Prototype For All Of The Chain's Stores In US

The Lidl grocery store in Spotsylvania County that drew droves of customers on its opening day last week was the prototype for every store that the discount supermarket chain has been building in the United States.

Previously hidden from view behind a black security fence, the store at state Route 3 and Gordon Road was the company’s test site for everything from signage to the number of aisles to the assortment of produce and other products that would be sold. One goal was to make the stores as efficient as possible so Lidl can keep prices low.

“It served as a test facility, a sandbox for us to test every single thing,” said spokesman Will Harwood. “We used all the learnings there to replicate and build the other stores, and we’ve taken all those learnings and put them into Plank Road.”
