   PA Physicians Become Beef Wise

Bedford – The national beef checkoff, thanks to the Colorado, Iowa and Pennsylvania Beef Councils, sponsored the annual Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians CME conference at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA November 2-4.

The academy’s annual fall meeting drew nearly 209 family physicians, residents and students from across Pennsylvania, for the three-day educational event. The conference allowed the checkoff to engage directly with this influential group of health care professionals to share the positive benefits of lean beef in the diets of their patients. Attendees enjoyed the wealth of information provided at the beef checkoff booth including Smart Start meal fact sheets highlighting beef as a first food, the Beef WISE, BOLD and Beef in a Mediterranean diet studies, as well as various recipe collections to share with patients. Physicians also learned the importance of lean beef in the diets of a variety of patients they counsel and how simple lean beef meals can be, with the new American Heart Association Heart Check-approved recipes.

During the conference, the checkoff hosted the educational session, “Exploring Protein’s Role in Weight Loss and Body Composition” by Drew Sayer, PhD, Instructor Fellow in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Sayer’s session served as an opportunity to assess the relationship between higher protein intake and weight loss, weight maintenance and body composition. After attending the session, Dr. Mamros of Claysville Family Practice, Claysville, Pa., commented, “When randomized trials were done, it showed that lean beef wasn’t that bad for you. In fact, it’s healthy! It’s fascinating to hear this new research.”

The beef checkoff garnered more than 200 on-site engagements through sharing the latest research, surveys and Dr. Sayer’s sponsored session. Of those engaging with the beef booth through an on-site survey, 71% polled had a positive opinion of beef and 29% had a neutral opinion of beef. No negative opinions of beef were observed and most attendees were thankful for our sponsorship. Additional physician engagements included a strolling reception on Friday, November 2, featuring a Grilled Bourbon Beef Skewer and table top discussions at lunch, which afforded the checkoff ample time to fully converse with physicians on their current recommendations concerning beef and ways to increase that. The beef checkoff is thankful for our continued partnership with the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and opportunities to build beef demand with their members.

The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians currently works on behalf of 5,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and students as a professional member-driven association. The Academy serves state physicians through acting as the leading resource for training of family physicians, being the primary voice of physicians on health care issues, setting standards for organized medicine and being a leader in the community on health care issues.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
