 Hampton Creek Wants To Scramble The Egg Industry With New Plant-Based Product

For most of the past year, Hampton Creek has had egg on its face. Top executives tried to oust CEO Josh Tetrick in a coup, the food company’s boardroom emptied out, and Target pulled its faux mayonnaise off shelves. The San Francisco startup is now trying to clean up its act — and get the egg off not just its face but also breakfast plates, with the help of a new board of directors, fresh funding and a new, egg-free product made from vegetable protein.

Ruth Farms, home of Happy Yolks LLC, held an open house Thursday to give the public a look at its operation, which is still under construction. Ruth Farms will use Tecno Cage Free Poultry Systems, which houses a large number of laying hens without the confinement of cages. The operation will consist of two buildings, each of which will have two stories containing six, 468-foot long rows of feeder space, able to accomodate over 101,000 layers per floor.

The American Dairy Coalition requests FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb to take immediate action and prohibit the use of “milk” in product labels used on plant-based alternative products.
