The produce associations have sent out announcements to their respective members announcing an Ethical Charter on Responsible Labor Practices. So now the question is simple: Has this effort been a success? Not surprisingly, the answer depends on how one defines success.

 Industry Expecting Large Crop For Northwest Pears For 2018-19 Season Based On Latest Estimate

On August 1, Northwest pear growers released their latest crop estimate for the 2018-19 season. Based on data reported fromWashington's Wenatchee and Yakima districts and Oregon's Mid-Columbia and Medford districts, this year will be the fourth largest crop in history. While the initial season estimate came in at 18.9 million standard box equivalents, or approximately 415,000 tons of fresh pears, the current estimate is around 20.2 million standard box equivalents, or 444,400 tons.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced that the Harmonized Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Plus+ audit program for specialty crops is now accepted as technically equivalent by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
