On Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, Celebrity Chef Lala Diaz discussed the benefits of avocados during a supermarket tour she led for kids and their parents at the Boyle Heights Food4Less in Los Angeles as a result of Avocados from Mexico’s recent donation of $15,000 to White Memorial Medical Center (WMMC), a not-for-profit, community hospital in downtown Los Angeles.

Avocados from Mexico’s donation is providing critical funding to sponsor two six-week classes of WMMC Center for Diabetes’ Healthy Eating Lifestyle Program (HELP) to teach families at risk for developing type II diabetes about nutrition. As part of that class, Chef Lala, assisted by a White Memorial dietician, taught children about reading food labels to help make smarter food choices. The supermarket tour gave them a hands-on opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the HELP classes.

“The supermarket tour gets kids out of the classroom and into real-life situations where important food choices are made—their local grocery store,” said Emiliano Escobedo, Marketing Director, Avocados from Mexico. “We were thrilled to partner with White Memorial Medical Center, Chef LaLa and Food4Less to provide this valuable lesson to the students.”

Over the course of the programs, participants learned how to live healthier lives through fun interactive games, as well as integrate exercise into their everyday activities and reduce their weight and body fat.
