Nogales – Ta-De Produce, a leading Nogales distributor since 1966, is focusing their 2017-18 season program on building partnerships between Mexican and U.S. producers. To that end it has launched an educational initiative to raise the quality bar for both U.S. imports and AZ-based producers named Border Agriculture & Sustainable Trade Alliance (BASTA).

Ta-De Distributing president Robert Bennen, Jr., sees BASTA as a natural progression for the company’s sustainability and social-responsibility efforts launched in 2015: Sonora AGRO, noting: “Working with newer Sonora growers as well as getting to know our local producers here due to involvement in our farmer’s market (Mercado), we see that improved practices can help them bring their products to market quicker and with improved quality. This means risk-free and seamless sourcing for our customers.”

Bennen adds that demand for more sustainable/organic and local products by leading U.S. supermarket buyers is high but smaller growers are often unable to meet their needs due to quality, volume or lack of proper certification or knowledge of how to go about it.

The exclusive program will primarily address education, including market demands (what retailers and consumers want); how to obtain organic and fair-trade certifications, plus quality control and sustainability best practices.

Guest speakers from major universities, the USDA and successful growers in AZ and Sonora will complete a curriculum that also includes field/farm visits and retail introductions. The program, slated to receive funding grants, will be free to producer participants on a first-come, first-served basis starting January.

Ta-De’s Jesus Clark, formerly with the Loblaw’s Supermarkets and the USDA, will lead the effort, in partnership with the company’s marketing and merchandising team that will collect retail intel. Clark recently published a QA commitment statement that outlines Ta-De’s approach to the topic (download Clark doc HERE)

Ta-De Produce is a third-generation, family-run produce distributor founded by Carlos Bennen in the 1950s. The company, named 2015 Pillar of the Industry by the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, is known for its green beans, and also distributes bells, specialty peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, tomatoes and the aforementioned Asian greens. This year it introduced its earth-friendly brand, MaidenEarth, targeted to Millennials.
