Dallas, PA – In 2010, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) data showed that 31 percent of the available food supply – edible and nutritionally sound – ends up in the trash.

Metz Culinary Management is doing something about it.

The company has partnered with Hungry Harvest, a D.C-area organization rescues so-called “ugly” produce. Hungry Harvest redirects fruits and vegetables that are lacking in eye appeal and redirects them from landfills to people in need.

Metz is connecting rescued produce to its school and hospital kitchens in the Baltimore and D.C. metro area. Recipients include LifeBridge Health Hospitals, Mercy Medical Center, St. Coletta’s School and Trinity Washington University.

Metz is also planning support of co-op boxes that deliver ugly produce directly to needy residents, providing them with food that has been steeply discounted. The collaboration will includes Metz’s participation in Hungry Harvest’s annual Earth Day farm market, April 22, 2018.

Maureen Metz, VP of Merchandizing for Metz Culinary Management says, “We love this effort because it does great things for the communities in which it is working. It relies on a plan that simply makes sense – connect hungry people with food that is perfectly good except for the way it may look. So rather than winding up in a landfill, it’s making a big difference.

“It also speaks to Metz’s support of sustainability efforts in the food services industry.  We at Metz take very seriously our responsibility to operate with a focused, “green” outlook. The future of our industry relies on it, as does the future of our planet,” she concludes.
