Bakers Prepare Fastnachts For Doughnut Day

They are oddly shaped and made with mashed potatoes.

They don’t even have holes, but people can’t seem to get enough of the doughy
goodness of fastnachts, the traditional fare of Doughnut Day.

Jim McKeone, owner of Plain & Fancy bakery, Schuylkill Haven, said he will
probably sell about 3,000 dozen of the Pennsylvania Dutch-style doughnut today.

The day before Lent is known as Mardi Gras, Shove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday.

But in Schuylkill County and Pennsylvania Dutch country, it’s called Doughnut
Day.
