The smell of sweet, buttery frosting filled a corridor at NorthPark Mall on
Tuesday as more than 30 professional cake decorators from around the region
competed to create picture-perfect pastries.
People who milled about the mall stopped to look at the long tables of cakes,
cupcakes and cookies, shooting photos of their favorites with their cell phones.
Many of the decorators said they get inspiration from hit shows such as Cake
Boss on the TLC network and Ace of Cakes on the Food Network.
We have some real talent and we enjoy getting out and showing everyone what
they can do, said Don Wilkens, head of bakery operations for Hy-Vee, which
sponsored the contest. Most of the decorators in the contest were from the
grocery chain.
