For the Hoards, making pies was an afterthought, but now it's got their full attention.
The Hoards this week opened Hoard's Bakery, 11 W. First St. in Riverside. It's currently open for wholesale production, and it opens June 1 as a retail store open Monday to Saturday selling pies, pastries and coffee.
"We finally decided it is time to expand, and that is what we are doing," said Jonathan Hoard, who co-owns the bakery with his wife, Erin.
The Hoard's pie business started as something of a fluke. Jonathan Hoard had been in the office furniture industry, and on the side, he was cultivating a variety of produce on the family farm in Hills to sell at the Iowa City Farmers Market.
