Kellogg Must Fix Sanitation at Eggo Plant, FDA Says

Kellogg Co. must fix sanitation violations at an Atlanta plant after the
contamination of Eggo buttermilk waffles with Listeria bacteria, the Food and
Drug Administration said in a Jan. 27 letter released today.

Kellogg, the largest U.S. breakfast-cereal maker, fully addressed all of the
observations in the letter before resuming production at the plant in late
October, Kris Charles, a company spokeswoman, said today by e-mail. The company
plans to respond shortly to the FDA, she said.

Following an inspection of the factory from Oct. 22 through Oct. 29, the FDA
said it found employees cleaning equipment with high-pressure water that
splashed near raw ingredients. The FDA posted the letter, sent by LaTonya
Mitchell, its acting district director in Atlanta, to Kellogg Chief Executive
Officer David Mackay, on its Web site.
