A legislative committee is supporting a bill that aims to boost Maine’s troubled lobster industry by pumping more money into marketing the state’s signature seafood.

Last August, Gossen sold Louisiana Foods to industry leader Sysco Foods – and it is now called Sysco Louisiana Seafood. Terms of the sale included him staying on as the chairman. “It was important to me that the culture of Louisiana Foods remain the same,” he explained on why he agreed to stay. “We are known for the best quality of seafood, and I didn’t want that to be lost with the transition.”

Taiwan Tilapia Farms Earn ASC Certification

Twelve Taiwan tilapia farms and two processing plants belonging to Tainan City’s Nan Ying Aquaculture Association have been certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, according to the Council of Agriculture Fisheries Agency April 21.

Maryland DNR Releases 2013 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Numbers

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources today released the 2013 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey numbers, showing mixed results. The number of spawning-age females increased substantially this year – by 52 percent − indicating that the current management framework to protect adult female crabs is working. However, poor reproduction in 2013 and what appears to be high mortality within the record 2012 year-class resulted in an overall decline in the Bay-wide population.
