Rhode Island Gov. Chafee Signs Local Agriculture & Seafood Act Into Law

DEM Director Coit noted that Governor Chafee celebrated Agriculture Day in the most powerful way he could by signing into law the Local Agriculture and Seafood Act. The measure increases DEM's authority to engage in marketing and outreach for local agriculture and seafood products; establishes a state Food Policy Advisory Council; and allows DEM's Division of Agriculture to administer a grants program for new farmers and organizations that support the growth, development, and marketing of the state's agricultural and commercial fishing sectors.

Safeway Named Most Sustainable Seafood Grocer By Greenpeace USA For Second Consecutive Year

For the second year in a row, Greenpeace USA has ranked Safeway Inc. number one in the U.S. on its grocery sustainability scorecard, which rates the Top 20 national grocery retailers on the sustainability of their seafood practices. In addition, Safeway was one of only two national retailers to score a green rating, the highest category of ratings that a grocer can score. This marks the first year in the six-year history of the Greenpeace scorecard that any retailer achieved a green rating.

Mexico Baja California Pole & Line Yellowfin & Skipjack Tuna Fishery Earns MSC Certification

The Mexico Baja California pole and line yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) tuna fishery has been awarded MSC certification. The fishery, which operates in the Mexican Exclusive Economic Zone off the west coast of Baja California, was certified following independent assessment to the MSC standard for sustainable, well-managed fisheries. Products from the fishery will now be eligible to bear the blue MSC ecolabel. This is the first MSC certified yellowfin tuna fishery in the world.
