Shaw’s Supermarkets today announced a major commitment to seafood sustainability, highlighted by the new availability of fresh case products certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the world's leading certification and eco-labeling program for sustainable seafood. In addition, Shaw’s will also provide fresh product verified through the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), a nonprofit marine science center. Shaw’s is the first New England-based retailer with fresh product certified by the MSC.

NOAA: U.S. Domestic Seafood Landings & Values Increase In 2010

U.S. commercial fishermen landed 8.2 billion pounds of seafood in 2010, valued at $4.5 billion, an increase of 200 million pounds and more than $600 million in value over 2009, according to a new report released today by NOAA. This report shows U.S. fishermen, who meet high environmental and safety standards, continue to be competitive in the dynamic, fast-paced global seafood marketplace.

President and CEO Larry Ciulla said the family sold for an undisclosed amount to Kristian Kristensen, the president and owner of Zeus Packing Co., a dogfish and skate processor that has been a tenant at the Ciullas' facility.
