We’re enjoying the new website from The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association (BBRSDA); launched just as the season kicks off. The new website focuses on Bristol Bay – the personalities of the fishing fleet, and the abundant and sustainable salmon runs of the region.

Todd Blount, President of Blount Fine Foods was one of this year's Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year(R) New England Award winners. This group of leading entrepreneurs was selected by an independent judging panel made up of previous winners of the award, leading CEOs, private capital investors and other regional business leaders. The winners were revealed at a gala event on June 15th at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.

South Carolina Fresh Shrimp Finally Arrive

Last week, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources trawls began pulling in summer brown shrimp. “They came out of nowhere all of a sudden,” said DNR biologist Larry DeLancey. It was welcome news for a shrimp fleet that’s taken a beating from cheaper, farm-raised imports and higher fuel prices.

Ocean Choice Provides Update On Port Union Facility

Ocean Choice International (OCI) today announced that it will contribute to a fund in collaboration with the Provincial Government to assist the affected workers at its Port Union shrimp processing facility. OCI will contribute up to $200,000 to the program, which will mean that affected employees will get an additional 4 weeks work (from 10 to 14 weeks). It will also mean increased earnings for employees from Employment Insurance payments.

Norton Sound Red King Crab Prices Climbing

Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. and Norton Sound Seafood Products announced June 28 that fishermen will be paid $5.29 a pound this summer for Norton Sound red king crab at the dock in Nome.
