Ascutney, Vermont Woman Wins Oakhurst Dairy's Living Healthy Shopping Tour Sweepstakes

PORTLAND, Maine — Donna Builder of Ascutney, Vermont, is the latest winner of Oakhurst Dairy’s “Living Healthy Shopping Tour” sweepstakes. Builder received a $100 shopping spree to spend at her local supermarket and had an in-store nutrition shopping consultation with Oakhurst Dietitian Pam Stuppy. The Oakhurst Dairy “Living Healthy Shopping Tour” sweepstakes is a program that combines nutrition education and a cash prize to help people make healthier grocery-buying decisions.

Builder recently spent part of an afternoon at the Hannaford Supermarket in Claremont, NH with Stuppy where they discussed a number of nutrition topics. They examined food nutrition labels and talked about ways to use this information to make decisions around food purchases. Builder was especially interested in learning more about calcium and vitamin D needs, supplements and ways to make recipes healthier. Some examples that Stuppy suggested were substituting certain products like buttermilk for oil when baking, and ways to reduce sugar while still creating sweetness using spices, vanilla or other extracts, fruit and/or citrus zests.

“Today’s grocery stores are filled with so many products that it can sometimes be overwhelming when it comes to choosing foods for a family,” said Pam Stuppy, Oakhurst Dietitian. “These shopping tours give me an opportunity to work one-on-one with our customers to provide individualized nutrition information and give them some tools to make healthier food shopping decisions.”

During the shopping tour, Builder purchased a gallon of Oakhurst whole milk, one of her regular grocery items since it is her husband’s favorite. She said: “I like the fact that Oakhurst doesn’t use artificial growth hormones in their products. And, shopping the store with their nutrition expert has been a wonderful experience. It has helped me understand simple adjustments I can make to the foods we like to make them healthier and the cash prize will certainly help me with my food budget.”

The 2011 sweepstakes marks the sixth year that Oakhurst’s Living Healthy Shopping Tours have taught winners how to make smarter decisions when they buy groceries for themselves and their families. The Living Healthy program is a central part of the third-generation, family-owned dairy’s commitment to getting involved to make a healthy difference in the Maine and New Hampshire communities it serves.
