Cacique Awards $10,000 To Members Of L.A. Union School District Community

LOS ANGELES  — Cacique®, the leading brand of authentic Mexican style cheeses, creams and chorizos in the U.S., and Guerrero®, the leader in tortillas and tostadas for the U.S. Hispanic market, announced the winners of its "Dia de los Muertos" school art contest held within the Los Angeles Union School District (LAUSD) on Friday, November 17. During an awards ceremony at Roosevelt High School, the co-sponsors presented $10,000 in prize money to contestants in honor of their creative works of art, which included short videos, songs, paintings and altars showcasing personal connections to the Día de los Muertos holiday.

A total of 47 prizes, ranging from $50 to $500, were awarded across each category:

  • First Place Students: Andrea Mora and Luis Martinez from Roosevelt High School, Yamilet Morales and Suzelli Nolasco from MSTMA at Roosevelt High School, Jisela Cervantes and Angel Murillo from STEM Academy of Boyle Heights, Valeria Perez, Jacqueline Zamora and Jose Herrerafrom Solis Learning Academy and Lucy Sanchez and Joey Ramos from USC Esperanza College Prep
  • First Place Classrooms: Classes from USC Esperanza College Prep, Roosevelt High School and Solis Learning Academy
  • First Place Parent Group: Parents from STEM Academy of Boyle Heights

"Dia de Los Muertos means a celebration of people's lives who are no longer with us. It's a way to remember them, what they liked and their lives overall," said Jacqueline Zamora of Solis Learning Academy and first place student contest winner. "I never actually celebrated Dia de Los Muertos, so this actually got me into my culture and it reminded me where I come from."

The 2017 Día de los Muertos School Contest, in partnership with the office of Mo?nica Garci?a, President of LAUSD School Board, was open to students, teachers and one parent group from each of the five participating schools, between October 2 until November 2. One representative from each of the sponsors and schools was invited to participate as a judge.
