WhiteWave & University Of Colorado Athletic Dept. Partner On Zero Waste Initiative

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — WhiteWave Foods, the Broomfield-based maker of Silk®, Horizon Organic®, International Delight® and licensee of LAND O LAKES® announced its continued partnership with the University of Colorado (CU), focused on “greening” Buffaloes football games and honoring homegrown CU athletics standouts. The company will also sponsor the WhiteWave Foods Family Fun Zone, a new area for families and children to gather before games.

“At WhiteWave, we’re always looking for ways to both inspire and support our hometown community,” said Blaine McPeak, president of WhiteWave Foods. “In addition to helping to green CU football games through this partnership, we’re also proud to work with CU to honor homegrown Coloradans who truly made a difference in CU athletics, both on and off the field.”

WhiteWave’s partnership, secured by Buffalo Sports Properties, media rights holder for CU Athletics and a property of Learfield Sports, includes the following programs:

Homegrown Heroes

Each week through March, WhiteWave will team up with the CU Athletic Department to honor a CU student-athlete who grew up in Colorado and has excelled for the Buffaloes. All WhiteWave Homegrown Heroes will have their stories of growing up in the Centennial State and impact on the Buffaloes shared on CUBuffs.com and CU’s social media outlets. Select winners will be featured on the Buffalo Stampede Coaches television show, mentioned during football and basketball radio broadcasts, and featured in the stadium on gameday on CU’s BuffVision video boards.

First implemented in partnership with WhiteWave during CU’s 2008 football season, this zero- waste and carbon-reducing initiative at Folsom Field and Coors Events Center made CU the first NCAA bowl championship team without any public trash cans in its stadiums, as well as one of the first to measure and demonstrate waste diversion. Over the last three years, WhiteWave and CU succeeded in recycling or composting more than 242,000 pounds of waste generated at Folsom Field and Coors Events Center. For the 2011 football season, CU’s goal is to recycle or compost at least 90 percent of the waste generated at Folsom Field. More than 30 student-moderated “Zero-Waste” zones inside the stadium will help reach this goal.

This collaboration between WhiteWave and CU will offer a new place for families to let loose before football games. Located in the tailgate area outside Folsom Field, the WhiteWave Foods Family Fun Zone will feature an obstacle course for kids, a variety of games, and samples of Horizon, Silk and International Delight for the entire family, including a coffee bar for parents.

“Our partnership with WhiteWave Foods continues to demonstrate what’s possible when two like-minded organizations come together to effect change,” said Mike Bohn, CU athletic director. “We look forward to partnering with WhiteWave again this football season to continue the sustainability initiatives we have worked together on since 2008 and on the new Homegrown Heroes program and WhiteWave Foods Family Fun Zone.”

WhiteWave’s partnership with CU is just one example of company’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and corporate responsibility, which WhiteWave calls Responsible Livelihood. In 2010 alone, WhiteWave employees volunteered more than 7,700 hours. WhiteWave is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas, water use and waste-tolandfill impact through programs like composting and energy efficiencies. In partnership with local organizations, like EcoCycle and A1 Organics, Wave Café cafeteria food is turned into compost and made available for employee gardens.

WhiteWave is also a Water Restoration Charter Customer with Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). The first of their kind, BEF Water Restoration Certificates (WRCs) are an effective way for businesses to take responsibility for their water consumption by returning an amount of water equal to what they’ve used back to the environment.
