Cheese Making Part Of Krohns’ Family Tradition

The Green Bay Press-Gazette talks with newsmakers in its Saturday conversation. Today, Roger Krohn of Trega Foods in the town of Montpelier talks about cheese making. Krohn recently received a Best of Show award for his mild provolone cheese at the 2010 World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison.

Q. Your family has a long history of cheese making in Luxemburg. How did it begin?

A. In 1892, Albert Gruetzmacher, my great-great uncle, built a cheese factory at our present location (N2915 Kewaunee County AB in the town of Montpelier). My grandfather Charles Krohn was his first cheese maker. Albert died in 1905, and Charles Krohn leased the plant from his widow until 1907, when he purchased it. In 1944, a new cheese plant was built at the same location. This plant is still present today but has had numerous additions.
