Salemville Smokehaus Blue Awarded First In Class At Wisconsin State Fair Cheese & Butter Contest

Richfield, WI – DCI Cheese Company (DCI) is pleased to announce that its newest product offering, Salemville Smokehaus Blue, was awarded first place in the Blue-Veined Cheese category at the 2010 Wisconsin State Fair Cheese & Butter Contest. The handcrafted, Applewood smoked cheese is aged 60 days and has a slightly sweet, lightly smoky flavor. Smokehaus Blue is available as six pound wheels and repacks at participating retailers nationwide. Salemville also took third in the Blue-Veined Cheese category with its Gorgonzola.

Salemville’s full line of blue-veined cheeses has been recognized as one of America’s best, most balanced blue cheese brands and was most recently acknowledged at the 2010 World Cheese Champion Contest as the best American-made blue cheese, ranking fifth after four imports among 41 entries. Salemville Smokehaus Blue continues this tradition of excellence as a beautifully veined, Applewood smoked addition to the award-winning artisanal line.

“The key to Smokehaus Blue’s great flavor is in the smoking,” states Dominique Delugeau, Senior Vice President of Sales at DCI. “We use Applewood to give it a slightly sweet, lightly smoked flavor that hits one of today’s top flavor trends. We’re so honored to have our hard work recognized as the best blue-veined cheese in Wisconsin, home of the world’s best cheesemakers.”

Salemville’s internationally renowned blue-veined cheeses are produced by an Amish community in Cambria, Wisconsin. The community collectively manages the company with an unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture that is ingrained in every aspect of their lifestyle. Cows are hand-milked twice daily without the use of machines or electricity and milk is delivered to the factory in traditional 10-gallon milk cans. All Salemville cheeses are farmer-certified rBGH free, rich in calcium and contain no preservatives or chemical additives.

Salemville Smokehaus Blue and the other category winners will be recognized during the Blue Ribbon Cheese & Butter Auction on August 5, 2010, at Wisconsin State Fair Park. The auction is a fundraising event for the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board and features the sale of the blue-ribbon entries.
