Ben and Penny’s boutique eatery and gourmet shop on Water Street in Newburgh brings us a new assortment of cheeses, many of which are varieties not available elsewhere in the area.

Represented in particular are smaller-sized, French or European-style aged goat cheeses with a wrinkled, Geotrichum mold rind, supremely elegant and just right for tucking in a picnic basket.

It’s especially nice to see these little guys because they’re so well-loved internationally, yet rare locally, where we tend to enjoy the tang of fresh goat cheese, but fear the robustness of many aged Chevres.

These cheeses are pungent, earthy and goaty, but they are mold-ripened and most similar in flavor to the fabulous and popular Humboldt Fog. They do not at all have the bacteria-ripened “stink” associated with washed-rind cow’s milk cheeses.
