Flower Shortage Stems From Iceland’s Volcano

Florists say that, with the possible exception of Valentine's Day, spring is the busiest time of the year because of weddings, proms and Mother's Day.

But this year, flower growers and shop owners say they may not be able to supply the demand due to flight cancellations in Europe.

Rene Hernadez of Arts and Flowers in St. Louis Park said the flower shortage has been unfortunate, especially for one bride getting married in less than two weeks who called the shop in a panic for peonies.

"She was in tears," Hernadez said.

Planes fly 90 percent of all popular spring flowers, including peonies and tulips, to the United States from Holland but, with planes grounded because of ash, it has been difficult to send items overseas, Hernadez said.
