LITITZ, Pa. — As a fourth-generation Hendricks, Sue Ellen flits from overseeing six greenhouses filled with 70 cut flower varieties to checking out the day’s orders and meeting with suppliers.

“We are the only flower shop that grows its own cut flowers and the largest grower of carnations east of the Mississippi,” she says with obvious pride.

She has a right to be proud. Hendricks’ Flowers has earned a stellar reputation in the town of Lititz, Pa.. “It’s the only place I order arrangements,” is a refrain heard again and again by local residents.

A big part of its success are the fresh flowers, which last longer and are prettier than those shipped from overseas. But the Hendricks are also finicky when it comes to the floral arrangements. They do not stick to any particular design formula.

“Each of our artists designs unique arrangements. No two are alike,” Sue Ellen said.
