Special Update: Andean Trade Preference and Drug Eradication Act

Importers of record will not have to pay duties in January on flowers coming
into the country from the three Andean nations of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Last night, Congress passed legislation (HR 4284) to extend the expiring Andean
Trade Preference and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) for one year, until December
31, 2010. The president is expected to sign the measure into law shortly. The
U.S./Peru free trade agreement was signed earlier this year and is in the
implementation stage. The U.S./Colombia free trade agreement has not yet been
signed by Congress and will have to be addressed in 2010.

This communication has been produced jointly by The Society of American Florists
(SAF), The Association of Floral Importers of Florida (AFIF) and The Wholesale
Florist & Florist Supplier Association (WF&FSA). These three organizations will
continue to distribute news about the ATPDEA as information becomes available.
