Annual Event Celebrates West Virginia Beef Industry

West Virginia's beef producers and state officials gathered to celebrate the importance of fathers – and beef.

The annual event, which took place June 14, highlighted the importance of the beef industry. According to Commissioner of Agriculture Gus Douglass, more than 10,000 farmers produce beef across the state, pumping more than $100 million into the economy each year.

"This industry here has been growing and really does not get the credit that's due," Douglass said. "We develop this product here. Its not like an automobile … you're getting the full benefit of the beef industry and agriculture here."

Beef for the lunch was provided by Flying W Farms out of Burlington. Flying W is a true farm-to-fork operation: the Woodworth family grows, feeds, slaughters and processes their own cattle, which they then sell to retail stores and restaurants, as well as through mail order.
