Brevard County FL Supermarkets, Food Bank Join Forces

MERRITT ISLAND — A new alliance between supermarkets and Second Harvest Food Bank gave the weekly food distribution at House of Hope Food Ministry a boost Monday morning.

The ministry, run by First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, feeds about 600 families per week.

The new program allows Second Harvest Food Bank to accept perishable food that is past the "sell by" date from supermarkets. That means better selection and more frozen meat at the weekly food giveaway.

"We've been blessed at how God has provided for our ministry," said Cal Burch, director of the program.
