Ground Beef Recalled By Winco Foods Due To Possible E. Coli Contamination

LANCASTER, NY – About two weeks ago, Winco foods announced that it was recalling ground beef sold at the Modesto store on Plaza parkway from April 3 through April 9 due to possible salmonella contamination

Now, the recall has been expanded to include ground beef sold at 70 stores in various states.

These states include California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The salmonella was detected originally when an independent lab was involved in a survey of supermarket ground beef. Two samples of ground beef were purchased form the Modesto WinCo stores and found to be tainted with E. Coli.

WinCo officials stated that "new information has come to light that potentially implicates WinCo's ground beef suppliers," according to findings of government agency investigations. The expanded recall includes ground beef packaged in Styrofoam trays with sale dates of March 28 through April 9.

Neil Gaffney, FSIS spokesman for the USDA stated that the Food Safety Inspection Service could not comment on details of the investigation, but did indicate that suppliers of the ground beef are being investigated as well as whether WinCo violated food safety regulations. Gaffney said that they are trying to determine how the contamination occurred and the point where contamination took place.

So far, we know of no illnesses that have been reported in relation to the ground beef tainted with E. Coli food poisoning.

Foodborne illnesses commonly cause only mild symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. E. Coli and other bacteria can lead to severe and even life threatening illness in certain individuals, including young children, pregnant women, elderly people and those with weak immune systems.
