Montana Organic Beef Sales Fall Off Dramatically

While lower prices and a big surplus of wheat put Montana’s organic grain
farmers in a holding pattern last year, sales of the state’s organic beef
products absolutely crashed

Meanwhile, the state’s organic produce growers report a pretty good year and
grocers who specialize in organics said demand was pretty flat as consumers
looked for ways to stretch their budgets.

Sales were off 47 percent in 2009, said Mark Smith, administrator of the Montana
Organic Producers Cooperative.

Two factors contributed to the drop, said Smith, a Lavina rancher, who quickly
added that sales are expected to bounce back this year.
