Pennsylvania Beef Council Board Gathers For Summer Meeting

Bedford – The Pennsylvania Beef Council (PBC) Board of Directors gathered today at Gaylan-Summit Angus in Breezewood, for their annual summer meeting. More than 30 board members and beef council staff attended the event, hosted by current board director Frank “Butch” Otto.

John Lundeen, Senior Executive Director for Market Research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), kicked off the meeting with a virtual discussion on findings from the Consumer Beef Index (CBI). The CBI is a nationally driven research tool that evaluates consumers’ perceptions of and demand for beef. The research summarizes how a designated region, state and/or metro area results differ from national levels for behavior and beliefs regarding beef and other meat proteins.

In particular, learnings gleaned from the CBI northeast research revealed that, compared to national averages, northeasterners are more likely to be cooking and making changes to improve the healthiness of their diets and lives. In fact, 38% of Pennsylvanians pay particular attention to the nutritional value of foods and 35% often make changes to improve the healthiness of their lifestyles, both rated above the national averages in those categories.

“We feel it is essential to invest in valuable research that will help us both learn from and connect with our target consumer,” noted PBC Executive Director Bridget Bingham. “The CBI provides us with meaningful data to build state programming that will drive demand and continue putting beef at the center of the consumer’s dinner plate.”

Following Lundeen’s presentation, PA Team BEEF member Bill Pinto joined the group for a delicious smoked top sirloin lunch and nutrition discussion led by Heather Mangieri, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN. Mangieri is the CEO/Nutrition Consultant at Nutrition CheckUp and discussed “High Quality Food to Fuel Race Day and Everyday.”

Pinto is one of fifteen PA Team BEEF members and serves as an active spokesperson, helping communicate the importance of beef’s nutritional profile to consumers. “You are what you eat. Before a big event it’s important for me and my training to stay healthy and recover well,” commented Pinto. “Because of beef checkoff resources, it’s so easy for me to talk about the healthy benefits of beef.”
