South Florida Business Woman, Marilyn Raybin, The “Chicken Queen”

Boca Raton, Florida – Chances are if you’ve eaten chicken, at some point in your life you’ve eaten chicken owned, sold, brokered, or traded by Marilyn Raybin, a South Florida, Boca Raton-based businesswoman who has earned the national reputation of “Chicken Queen.” While she may have earned this inauspicious moniker from having sold so much diced-chicken in the 90s, Raybin, and her partner, Valerie Lovell, owners of Marvell Foods, (www.MarvellFoods.com) were recognized in their industry’s leading national trade publication. The full page appears in the Spring Issue of the Urner Barry Reporter, a highly-specialized magazine that covers the poultry, egg, red meat and seafood industries. The story discusses not just the remarkably unique nature of the national food commodities, brokerage and trading business Marvell Foods has developed, but the entrepreneurial spirit of the two women in this mostly male-dominated industry.

Even within such a unique industry to begin with, Marvell Foods occupies an even further fascinating niche, as the article explains: “The role Marvell Foods plays is as integral and diverse as the foods the company handles.” The article continues:

“We are in the business of solving other people’s food problems, new opportunities literally crop up every day; you need to understand the food market, be nimble, and be ready to act immediately when something comes your way. Product finds its way to Marvell Foods’ staff of professional traders when a manufacturer is in need of a solution to a food production issue.”

Marvell Foods: “Food Problem Solvers, Opportunity Converters”

First and foremost, Marvell is in the food commodities business. “We are traders,” says Raybin, “we buy products for our own account and take possession right away, that’s why we get the best prices.” This could be a mis-cut where the calibration of the cutting machine is off a few centimeters or in the warehouse or transportation of the food if the temperature of the truck was off a couple of degrees, that food product might become available. Or, perhaps, the dating on the package might be “too close” for a retailer to sell, so manufacturers can’t sell these products at a retail level, so they call Marvell Foods. In turn, Marvell Foods has a huge network of clients – such as other traders, brokers and institutions, like food banks, distributors, wholesalers, suppliers, and even prisons, to whom they in turn sell these products.

“Everything you Wanted to Know About the Chicken Nugget, But were Afraid to Ask”

The article also includes a reduced reprint of Marvell Foods cheeky “Chicken Nugget Analysis Chart,” a 22” x 28” full-size four-color poster that is a classic, but whimsical butchers chart version of the “chicken nugget” and the importance this little “misunderstood” morsel enjoys in our country’s consciousness and popular food culture.
