Cherry Fruit Fly, Codling Moth Found In Wenatchee, WA

WENATCHEE — Ahh, June. Time for picnics, graduation ceremonies and … cherry fruit flies?

The first Western cherry fruit flies to be caught this year were found in a trap Friday near Miller Street.

“I expect it will be a grand year for cherry fruit fly because of the weather,” said Bonnie Shanafelt, pest control agent for the Chelan County Pest and Disease Control Board. Shanafelt said that since the cherry season looks to be normal — not compressed like last year — more time is available for the fly to breed in the ripe cherries. Shanafelt said that the fly was discovered “about on time” based on prediction models.

The first codling moths were also found in the Chelan area this week. Shanafelt said trackers and growers have been finding the codling moth in the upper Wenatchee valley and the pests are “probably everywhere” by now.
