Holiday Food Safety Kit Helps Prevent Food-Borne Illness

ATLANTA, Ga. – To be sure millions of consumers alleviate their anxiety about planning and preparing a safe, happy Thanksgiving feast, the Georgia Pecan Commission has partnered with the Partnership for Food Safety Education (PFSE) and the National Turkey Federation to create the Holiday Food Safety Success Kit and Web site, www.HolidayFoodSafety.org.

“The Georgia Pecan Commission responded to the Partnership’s appeal to help provide a resource for consumers that could alleviate some of the concern they feel about going back into the kitchen to prepare a large Holiday meal,” said Shelley Feist, executive director of the non-profit Partnership. “Food safety is a top consumer concern and even more so when preparing food for larger groups.”

Promoted through the PFSEs network of more than 60 Be Food Safe food retailers nationwide and available online at HolidayFoodSafety.org, the Holiday Food Safety Success Kit will include information on selection, storage recommendations of Georgia pecans along with recipe ideas. Information on purchasing, thawing and cooking turkey will be a highlight of the site, along with a holiday planner, kids games, family activities and holiday recipe ideas.

Most consumers dont realize that nuts, especially pecans, are perishable, says Buddy Leger, chairman of the Georgia Pecan Commission. It is our duty to spread the word and help consumers enjoy a stress-free, healthy holiday season by providing safety tips and our favorite health-focused recipes. We hope Georgia pecans bring as much joy to our consumers as they do to us. Consumer research conducted by PFSE found that the Holiday Success Kit is seen as a practical solution for planning and preparing a successful home holiday event because of the range of planning, preparation and food safety tips and activities found in one easy-to-navigate Web site.

Georgia Pecan Commission recipes on the sites menu planner include:

  • Georgia Pecan Pie with Honey Pecan Topping
  • Cumin-Spiced Georgia Pecans
  • Sourdough Bread Stuffing with Georgia Pecans, Leeks & Mushrooms
  • Green Beans with Red Peppers and Georgia Pecans
  • Pumpkin with Roasted Georgia Pecans and Sage

The Holiday Success Kit is provided to consumers as a public service by the leading non-profit food safety education organization in the United States. It is made possible with the support of the National Turkey Federation, Georgia Pecan Commission and through contributions of other active PFSE members.
