Kumato: The Black Sheep Of Tomatoes

We have a few long weeks until garden tomatoes are at their sun-kissed ripest.
Actually, now that light summer fare is on the menu and lots of garden produce is becoming available, the lack of local ripe tomatoes is hitting hard; as hard as or harder, maybe, than in January, when nobody expects to get a decent tomato.
Until finally, the European company Syngenta has addressed this problem head-on and created the Kumato, a hybrid (not genetically modified) tomato that is engineered primarily for eating pleasure.
I purchased a pack of Kumato tomatoes recently simply for the interesting chocolate color and was stunned by the tomato’s sweetness and juiciness.
