Amazon Grocery to Open in Vacated Space at Downsized Kohl’s Store

The right-sizing initiative by Kohl’s Corp. that includes testing partnerships with complementary businesses will include e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc.

Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS), based in Menomonee Falls, announced in 2018 it would pilot a concept in which the department store operator slims the footprint of a location, then leases the leftover space to another business. The idea is to see if the new tenant drives traffic into Kohl’s. The partnership started with discount grocer Aldi, which Kohl’s said would open a neighboring store at five to 10 locations. Last year, Kohl’s said it would try a similar test with gym chain Planet Fitness.

Both concepts follow a plan Kohl’s announced in August 2017. The department store chain said it planned to make almost half of its roughly 1,100 stores “operationally smaller” and more efficient.
