Mayor Cory Booker and other dignitaries were on hand today to officially open a Key Food Supermarket on Springfield Avenue, in Newark’s South Ward.
The 12,500-square-foot supermarket will create about 30 jobs and add to the neighborhood’s revitalization, according to a prepared statement.
The Newark store is owned by Aniya Foods LLC, which also owns two Key Food stores in New York. The supermarket, located in a former department store, will be the anchor for the redevelopment and expansion of a retail plaza.
The supermarket opening is part of a strategy to combat so-called “food deserts,” municipalities with large populations that don’t have access to fresh food. The issue has attracted more attention of late, with several cities, including Newark, trying to bring grocery stores to areas otherwise served by convenience stores selling prepared food.
