GM Fish Set To Be Raised In Albany, IN

ALBANY, Ind. — Local Farm Bureau leader Joe Russell, who has been selling genetically modified corn and soybean seeds for two decades, would feel honored to eat the nation's first genetically engineered seafood.

It's an FDA-approved product called AquAdvantage Salmon, which integrates a Pacific Chinook salmon growth-hormone gene into the genome of an Atlantic salmon. The Chinook gene is under the control of a "promoter" from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout.

"An eel and a salmon aren't going to crossbreed in nature," Russell said. "But science has figured out how to do that."
