Governor Signs Bill To Study Massachusetts-Branded Seafood

BOSTON — Local consumers may soon be able to find Massachusetts cod at seafood counters and grocery freezers next to Alaskan salmon and Maine lobster.

A bill, filed by Rep. James Cantwell of Marshfield and signed by Gov. Deval Patrick on Monday, would create a commission to consider ways to brand seafood caught in Massachusetts.

The commission would also consider whether a state marketing program for commercial fishing businesses would stabilize the industry.

The 13 commission members will be chosen from among the Legislature, state agencies and industry groups.
