N.C. Oysters Are Making A Comeback

March has arrived, and North Carolina’s oyster season is coming to an end.

You didn’t know North Carolina had an oyster season?

That’s understandable. The North Carolina oyster industry suffered a decline in the 20th century, caused by a combination of pollution, disease and harvest pressure.

That’s changing, though.

“Now they’re making a comeback. The oysters are pretty well regulated,” said Randy Russell, the owner of Full Moon Oyster Bar and Seafood Kitchen in Clemmons, and a co-owner of the Big Tuna Seafood wholesale company. In recent years, state and private agencies have developed restoration and hatchery programs to ensure that the oyster population increases.
