Odds Drop For An 'Extremely Early' Start To Maine Lobster Season

In their latest projections, scientists at the Portland-based Gulf of Maine Research Institute have dropped the odds of an extremely early start to Maine's 2016 lobster season.

An extremely early start would mean most of the state's fleet of lobster fisherman would be on the water between June 12 and 19 — the odds for that dropped to 36% in the research institute's latest projections, down from 68% in last week's report.

Still, above-average water temperatures in the Gulf of Maine still has the research institute projecting a 68% likelihood of a very early start to the season from the usual start date of early July, to June 19 to June 26.
