The majority of Washington’s halibut sport fishing seasons have been decided, and while the overall catch has decreased there will be enough on the table to keep anglers happy this spring and summer.
“There is a 15 percent reduction in the halibut quota from last year, and the lower figure is due to an overall stock biomass decrease,” said Michele Culver, the state Fish and Wildlife halibut manager.
The sport catch quota is 50,542 pounds (57,393 last year) in Puget Sound; 101,179 (108,030) off Neah Bay; 35,887 (42,739) off Westport; and 13,536 (15,735) off Ilwaco. The total 201,044 compared this year to 223,897 last year.
