Weather Cools Crawfish Supplies, Ups Prices

THIBODAUX The Good Friday crawfish boil is a cherished tradition for many local families, but suppliers and retailers say you’ll have to overcome shortages, high prices and long lines to before you feast this week.

Cold weather has limited the number of pond-harvested crawfish, as the mudbugs tend to stay burrowed in the muck during low temperatures.

Winter temperatures were well below average, hovering in the high 40s and low 50s since December. For instance, Houma’s average February temperature is about 57 degrees. This year, it was 48 degrees, according to Weather Underground. January’s average is usually about 56 degrees. This year, it was 48 degrees.
