Wellfleet Oysterfest To Hire Shellfish Specialist

WELLFLEET — The organizers of the Wellfleet OysterFest will hire a full-time shellfish specialist to help the town curb outbreaks of illness caused by food-borne bacteria and protect the multimillion-dollar local shellfish industry.

Shellfish Promotion and Tasting officials released the job description Wednesday.

Last week, town staff told the Board of Selectmen that SPAT intended to spend up to $100,000 annually to support the shellfish and aquaculture industry. The specialist will work with growers, harvesters, wholesalers, retailers and the public on safe handling and best practices, and on research and monitoring waters. The nonprofit group hopes the position will be a model for other shellfishing towns.

"It's going to be a long-term commitment towards this position," said Michele Insley, OysterFest manager.
