Sonoma Coast Dungeness Crab Arrives In Local Markets Ahead of New Year’s Celebrations

The commercial catch of Dungeness crab off the Sonoma Coast officially began on Wednesday, though crabbers were allowed to place their pots into the water beginning 8 a.m. Dec. 26.

Dungeness crab is a common Christmas delicacy in the Pacific Northwest. However, for the past several years, the fishery’s opening has been delayed due to variety of factors, including migrating whales becoming ensnared in crab traps and toxic domoic acid (from algae blooms) rendering the crab meat unsafe for human consumption. But, this year, it will open on December 1, as it traditionally has for several years prior to the onset of climate change and other human impacts.

NFI Crab Council Working Group Meets in Baltimore

The National Fisheries Institute’s Crab Council met in Baltimore, Maryland October 5th and 6th as part of its working group meeting series. The group last met in person in 2019 where it developed detailed units of assessment, to track Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIP), and endorsed the used of the Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) method to quantify and monitor progress.
