An independent assessment of the Leigh Port Partnership cockle fishery has found it meets the Marine Stewardship Council’s internationally recognised standard for sustainable fishing. The fishery can sell cockles marked with the MSC blue label from the next cockling season, which begins in July 2020.

Seto Inland Sea Oyster Fishery Now MSC Certified

Maruto Suisan Co. Ltd., a company based in the city of Aioi in Hyogo Prefecture, has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of sustainability for its oyster fishery in the Seto Inland Sea. It is the first rope grown oyster fishery in the world to receive MSC certification.

First Oyster Fishery in the Americas MSC Certified

The certification comes following a rigorous 10-month assessment carried out by independent, third party assessor MRAG Americas, to ensure the fishery meets the MSC fisheries standard, including ensuring sustainable fish stocks; minimizing environmental impact, and ensuring there are responsive management systems in place.
