The Flower Hill Institute serves as the overall Technical Assistance Coordinator for the MPPTA Program, working closely with AMS and the TA Providers to connect meat and poultry processors, USDA grant applicants, and grant-funded project managers to the resources and expertise best suited to support a project’s needs.

Fresh Produce Procurement Reform Act Introduced in Both Houses

Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) and David Valadao (R-CA-22) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the Fresh Produce Procurement Reform Act (Procurement Reform Act) in both the House and the Senate.

Strengthening Local Meat Economies Act Promotes Fairness in Procurement 

Senator John Fetterman, (D-PA), introduced the Strengthening Local Meat Economies Act, S. 2972, (SLMEA). The Strengthening Local Meat Economies Act is a bill designed to support independent small and very small processors by promoting fairness in US Department of Agriculture (USDA) meat procurement  and reinvesting in local meat markets. 

102 Groups Urge Congress to Choose Farmers over Big Meat in Ag Appropriations Bill

102 farmer, rancher, consumer, labor, farmworker, and faith organizations sent a letter urging the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations to remove a policy rider from its FY24 Agriculture Appropriations bill when it is considered during Wednesday’s markup. The rider would prevent USDA from writing, preparing, or publishing proposed rules to strengthen the Packers and Stockyards Act, a landmark law intended to protect farmers and ranchers from abusive and anti-competitive behavior.

COMMENT: NSAC Responds to USDA Announcement of Meat Processing Grants

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the opening of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) with a round of competitive grants to expand meat processing capacity nationwide. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) issued the following comment, attributable to Eric Deeble, NSAC Policy Director, in response to USDA’s announcement.
